If it's seemed like forever since we've last had a album repack update, it's because it has. This past January saw new designs released for Album 22 - and today, over five months later, we finally have new artwork to unveil! This particular cover was briefly featured in the last video podcast, in which we saw a preliminary sketch for Album 28. But now we have the full, completed art in all its high resolution glory!
As I've mentioned several times in the past, I'm a huge fan of Gary Locke's illustrations - and once again, I'm thrilled with this new design. Not only is it a vast improvement from the original cover, which had one glaring inaccuracy with Jason depicted at City Hall, but it also conveys a lot more vigor and excitement. What do you think?

Love it!!! Thank you for keeping us updated! ;)
ReplyDeleteThe addition of the balloons is great, adds a lot of color to it. Good stuff!
ReplyDeleteYou mention that Jason wasn't supposed to be on the old cover, but is that not meant to be Jason on the new cover? Admittedly, it does looks more like the old Jason artwork we're used to seeing, and less like Gary Locke's interpretation of him, but my mind went straight to Jason when I saw the cover.
ReplyDeleteI don't see Jason in the new cover... maybe he shaved off his goatee?
ReplyDeleteCanonically, he never grew the goatee until Vol. 37, Locke's art notwithstanding. If you compare that man in the middle with Jason's original art at the Wiki, you'll notice that they are extremely similar. In fact, I'm convinced that that is Jason.
ReplyDeleteI really liked the old cover because this one is really busy.
ReplyDeleteActually this one is inaccurate too, because it shows Tom with the key to the city at the airport when Whit's getting off the plane. Tom didn't show up until Whit got to City Hall in the episode.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, inaccuracy to the exact storyline doesn't matter so much as how the cover evokes the content of this album.
ReplyDeleteThere is never a moment in Darkness before Dawn where Dr. Blackgaard is standing over the city - but everyone loves the DBD art:

This art does a terrific job of showing the fun celebratory spirit of this album: Whit is finally back and Odyssey could not be happier
Re: Anonymous... not EVERYONE loves the Darkness Before Dawn artwork, as it heavily features a video series interpretation of Whits End, with the ginormous greenhouse/garage of terrifying flying thing. However, I think you have a good point about a strict vs spirit artistic interpretation.
